Congratulations to our outstanding JROTC cadets for their incredible achievements in the Cadet of the County competition! Earning top honors were Jr. NCO Vincent Matranga, Sr. NCO Evan Weaver, and Sr. Elizabeth Wilkins, who won first place in the Staff & Officer category while also retaining her title as Cadet of the County.
The Cadet of the County program recognizes the most dedicated and exceptional JROTC cadets across the region. Winners are selected based on leadership, academic excellence, and service within their unit and community. Earning this distinction is a testament to their hard work, discipline, and commitment to excellence.
JROTC, or the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, is a leadership and character development program sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces. It instills values of teamwork, discipline, and citizenship in students, preparing them for future success—whether in military or civilian careers.
We are incredibly proud of our cadets for representing East Duplin with distinction and leadership. Their dedication and achievements continue to inspire their peers and strengthen our JROTC program. Congratulations once again!
The East Duplin Hunter Safety Team demonstrated outstanding skill and sportsmanship at the recent District 2 Youth Hunter Education Tournament, bringing home multiple top awards in archery, rifle, and hunter skills test. Competing against some of the best teams in the region, both the Gold and Blue teams showcased their dedication and expertise in outdoor safety and marksmanship.
The Gold Team had an impressive performance, securing 1st place in archery and 1st place in rifle, demonstrating their precision and accuracy. They also placed 2nd in the hunter skills test, highlighting their knowledge of safety procedures, hunting regulations, and survival techniques.
The Blue Team also had a strong showing, earning 3rd place in archery, proving their skill and determination in a highly competitive field.
The Hunter Safety Team program teaches students essential skills in firearm safety, hunting ethics, wildlife conservation, and outdoor survival. Through practice and competition, team members not only sharpen their marksmanship but also develop teamwork, discipline, and a deep respect for nature.
With their impressive results at the district tournament, the East Duplin Hunter Safety Team looks forward to future competitions and continued success.
East Duplin High School is proud to announce that Robert Daniel Jones has been selected as a Morehead-Cain Scholar, one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships in the nation. This incredible honor will provide him with a fully funded, four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, along with access to global travel, hands-on internships, and leadership development opportunities.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship, established in 1945, is the nation’s first merit-based scholarship program and is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, character, scholarship, and physical vigor. With thousands of applicants from across North Carolina, the U.S., and the world, only a select few receive this life-changing opportunity each year.
Daniel Jones, a dedicated student and leader at East Duplin High School, has built an impressive resume of academic excellence, community service, and leadership. “This scholarship is a dream come true,” Daniel said. “I’m incredibly thankful to God and grateful for the support of my teachers, family, and community. I especially want to thank Mr. Corey Keffer, Mr. Scott Ballard, Ms. Katy Hunter, and Ms. Debra Sholar for all of their encouragement, references, guidance, and support throughout my four years at East Duplin. The Morehead-Cain will allow me to grow as a leader and make an even greater impact in the future.”
Daniel is the son of Robert and Erica Jones. His family, school, and community have been instrumental in shaping his journey, encouraging him to pursue his passions and strive for excellence.
As a Morehead-Cain Scholar, Jones will have the opportunity to engage in transformative experiences, including a fully funded summer enrichment program, access to a network of accomplished alumni, and a rigorous academic environment at UNC-Chapel Hill. He plans to study Biomedical Engineering and Biological Physics, with aspirations of making advancements in medical technology and becoming a neurosurgeon to help others overcome physical challenges.
Congratulations, Daniel! We look forward to seeing all the amazing things you will accomplish at UNC-Chapel Hill and beyond.
East Duplin hosted its annual Queen of Hearts ceremony, a beloved event that showcases local club sweethearts and raises money for Kitty Askins Hospice Center. This year, the community's generosity shined as over $27,000 was raised through various fundraising efforts.
Each participant in the ceremony has organized individual fundraisers throughout the year, with the one raising the most money earning the title of Queen of Hearts. This year’s winners were announced in an exciting ceremony: Isla Miller was named 2nd Runner Up, Emory Raynor took 1st Runner Up, and Tanner Smith was crowned the Queen of Hearts.
The funds raised will go toward supporting the vital services of Kitty Askins Hospice Center, continuing its mission to provide compassionate care to those in need.
Congratulations to the talented students of East Duplin High School for their outstanding performances at the NC State Beta Convention.
- Daniel Jones took 1st place in 12th Grade Science.
- Zoe Thigpen earned 1st place in On-Site Cake Decoration (Division I).
- Angeles Silva Coria secured 2nd place in Recyclable Art (Division II).
- The EDHS Group Talent team brought home 3rd place in the Large Group category.
These students not only showcased their impressive skills but also earned spots to compete at the National Beta Convention. East Duplin was well represented at this year’s event.
